Service/Therapy Dogs

What is the Difference Between Service, Therapy, and Emotional Support Dogs?

  • Service Dogs - Service Dogs provide a service or task for someone with a diagnosed disability. They have access to everywhere the general public has access to. This includes restaurants, museums, grocery stores, etc. The general public cannot go into the kitchen at a restaurants, employee restricted zones, etc. so service dogs don’t have access to these areas either. You cannot be denied entry to any public place while having a service dog unless they are disrupting the environment in which they are in. ADA Service Dog Requirements

  • Therapy Dog - Therapy Dogs typically will go to local nursing homes, hospitals, schools, etc with their owners to improve the lives of others! Therapy dogs do not have the same access as service dogs, and you still need to get permission to enter the premises.

  • Emotional Support Dog - Emotional Support Dogs are those dogs that provide comfort or support emotionally for the owner. Emotional Support Dogs don’t have the access of either Therapy or Service Dogs. They can only go where every other dog is allowed access to.

What Does Prospect Mean?

When a dog is called a “prospect” it means that they are in training. Therapy and Service work are areas that not every dog is capable of achieving and succeeding at. This could be due to confidence around certain environments, their temperament, a negative experience, etc. Therapy and Service work are one of the most intensive trainings you can put a dog through and there is little to no room for error so it’s important that we keep this in mind when training for service and therapy work.
